Sweden bans these tires on December 1, 2024

It is not only in Germany that they crack down on previously perfectly legal winter tires. In Sweden, the same thing happens just a little later.

From 1 December 2024 it will be illegal to drive around on certain studless winter tires in Sweden. If there is only the so-called "M+S" marking on the tyres, this triggers a ticket.

At M Sweden, the Swedish counterpart to FDM, motorists are therefore encouraged to check their winter tires extra thoroughly this year before the car has its wheels changed.

– It's something I think most people don't know about. But it's something we have to keep an eye on, says the organisation's Carl Erik Stjernvall to Carup .

The "M+S" marking stands for mud and snow, and although the industry stopped using the marking system way back in 2017, there may still be tires like this lying around in the garages.

In Sweden, the last M+S tires were sold as late as 2019. Instead, as of December 1, only winter tires with the small mountain and snowflake symbol on the sides. So in Sweden.

The Swedes must also drive with winter tires in the period from 1 December to 15 March. This is not the case in Germany, but here the "M+S" tire is banned even earlier. Namely as early as October 1 this year.

The penalty for driving around on the wrong winter tires in Germany is up to 120 euros, equivalent to a little over 900 Danish kroner. Speaking of Danish kroner, the debate about winter tires is still raging here at home.

Most recently, the Norwegian Transport Agency has rejected that it makes sense to mandate winter tires in Denmark. But several actors in the industry believe that this is misleading nonsense towards motorists. Read more about it here .
