Scania buys bankrupt car factory – saves 260 jobs

With the acquisition of Northvolt Systems Industrial Division, Scania secures 260 specialists in battery technology for the electric off-road machines of the future.

Scania has acquired Northvolt Systems Industrial Division. The acquisition signals Scania's commitment to batteries, strengthening the company's position within battery technology.

The acquired division develops and produces battery systems. They are used primarily in machines for the mining and construction industries. This is a specialized market.

Northvolt Systems Industrial Division employs around 260 people. Production takes place primarily at a leased factory in Gdańsk, Poland. The employees here have extensive experience.

This is what the Swedish section of Auto Motor och Sport writes.

The development work is centered in Stockholm, Sweden. New battery solutions and technologies are being worked on here. The center is important for innovation.

Northvolt is generally a major player in the battery market. They supply cells to several car manufacturers and industries.

The acquisition is seen as a strategic step for Scania. It will support the development of electrified solutions, especially within off-road applications.

Focus on battery technology and electrification

This means that Scania now has direct access to specialized knowledge. Knowledge about the design and assembly of battery packs is important for the future.

Sara Hermansson, Head of Scania Power Solutions, says of the acquisition: "Northvolt Systems Industrial Division brings valuable expertise in battery technology and assembly."

“Their capabilities strengthen our modular approach,” continues Sara Hermansson. This supports the development of complete electrified solutions.

The solutions are targeted at off-road applications, according to Hermansson. Scania sees great opportunities in that segment.

Scania will continue to operate the acquired business as an independent company under the Scania umbrella.

The company will become part of Scania Ventures and New Business, Scania's unit for new business areas and investments.

Independent operation under Scania Ventures

The purchase price for Northvolt Systems Industrial Division has not been disclosed. The parties have agreed to keep it confidential for now.

The acquisition comes at a time of increased focus on electrification, including for heavy vehicles and special machinery in industry.

Scania is generally working towards more sustainable transport solutions. Battery technology is a central part of that strategy for the future.

The acquisition gives Scania better control over an important part of the value chain. It can significantly accelerate the development of new electric products.

Scania is known for their trucks and buses. You can read a lot more about Scania's large trucks and other heavy vehicles. Among other things, Scania is having more than a hard time actually getting rid of the electric trucks. Read more about it here .
