Police warn drivers: You will lose your driving license

14 drivers have already lost their driving licenses conditionally because they drove past the police with limited visibility out of the windshield. Now law enforcement is warning others.

Police are warning drivers that driving with iced windows can result in fines and a suspended license. 14 drivers recently learned this after receiving their sentences in court.

During the cold weather with temperatures below zero degrees, police often see drivers driving around with windows covered in ice and fog. This makes it difficult for drivers to see properly, which is dangerous for everyone in traffic.

– It can be dangerous for others if a driver drives around with limited visibility, and this is something we prioritize highly during this period of frost, says head of the traffic department, Police Commissioner Claus Stoltenberg, Copenhagen West Police, in a press release .

He advises drivers to take a few minutes to remove ice and mist from all windows and mirrors so they have a clear view when driving. He also reminds drivers to make sure to keep the windows clean throughout the drive if they fog up again.

Lack of visibility can cost drivers dearly. In addition to a fine of 2,500 kroner, it can also lead to a conditional suspension of their driving license for three years. This means that drivers must pass an orientation driving test – both theoretical and practical – within six months in order to keep their driving license.

In the Glostrup Court, 14 drivers were convicted on December 16, 2024, of having a license plate with severely limited visibility and thus disregarding the safety of other road users. All received a fine of DKK 2,500 and a conditional suspension of their driving license for three years, as well as a requirement to take an orientation driving test.

Among those convicted was a 44-year-old man from Ishoj, who on January 18, 2024, drove with a windshield where only a small part was defrosted, while the side windows and mirrors were completely covered in ice.

During a traffic operation at schools in Ishoj on January 16, 2024, the police stopped six drivers in 40 minutes, all of whom had windows covered in ice and fog.

A 23-year-old man from Bagsværd was stopped on Værebrovej on January 15, 2024, with a windshield completely covered in fog.

A 26-year-old woman from Rungsted Kyst was driving on January 12, 2024 with so much ice on the windows that visibility was severely limited. She was also ticketed for talking on a cell phone during the intersection.

A 26-year-old man from Ishoj was stopped in a van with only a little ice scraped off the windows on January 8, 2024. The same evening, a 29-year-old man was stopped in Taastrup with similarly poor visibility.

A 19-year-old man from Bagsværd was stopped on January 4, 2024 with a windshield that had only two small holes, while the rest was covered in ice and snow.

A 50-year-old woman from Albertslund was stopped on December 3, 2023 with a windshield where only one side was de-iced.

A 29-year-old man from Allerod was stopped on November 28, 2023 with a windshield covered in so much ice that visibility was severely limited.
