Petrol engines can be put back in electric cars, promises Stellantis

Should the electric cars turn out to flop, or should there be a need for it for other reasons, electric cars can be equipped with a combustion engine, says the Stellantis Group.

At the world's fourth largest car group, you are no more certain about electric cars than you are ready to change your mind immediately.

For the same reason, the Stellantis management now says that future electric cars will also be able to be equipped with a combustion engine if the need arises.

That's what WardsAuto writes.

The media quotes Stellantis' chief financial officer Natalie Knight as saying that Stellantis will build 'flexible' platforms for electric cars.

In this way, the Stellantis brands do not exclude themselves from putting combustion engines back into otherwise dedicated electric cars.

An example of the flexibility Natalie Knight talks about can be found at Opel. In Rüsselsheim, the new version of the SUV Grandland is not more electric than that it is also available as a hybrid car.

In other words, Stellantis will build versions of electric cars converted to internal combustion engines if the need is there. At least the finance director is not shy about it.

– I will not ignore the fact that we want to remain close to the consumer. And if we see that there are other options with the models we first launch as electric cars, we will look at it, says Natalie Knight.

The announcement is in line with what Stellantis' managing director Carlos Tavares has previously made. Namely that the group is ready to change its mind about electric cars if the political climate and the public's attitude change. Read more about it here.

Stellantis is not the only car group that is ambivalent about electric cars. At Toyota, for example, they do not believe that electric cars will get 'more than 30 percent of the global car market'. And at BMW, unlike many of its German competitors, it refuses to set an end date for the internal combustion engine.
