One of the world's wildest roads reopens after emergency closure

Trollstigen is one of those roads that you just have to have a map on before you put on your clogs. Now you have the opportunity again after the Norwegian authorities urgently closed the road last year.

Trollstigen, which opened to traffic back in July 1936, is now open again after the stretch was closed by the Norwegian authorities last year.

At that time – in July 2024 – there were fears of more rock slides along the route. And it was not worth risking human lives for the 11 hairpin bends. Not even if these in themselves are worth the entire trip.

In 2022 alone, 1.1 million tourists traveled along the stretch of road. However, in recent years there have been several cases where drivers have been hit by rock slides.

And in July 2024, this led the authorities to close the road. According to Norwegian TV2, the closure has cost the tourism industry in the area a lot in lost revenue.

However, the Norwegian government has allocated funds to improve safety in the area. And now the first stage of improvement has been completed in such a way that it is safe to reopen the legendary stretch of asphalt.

Closed again until October

However, not permanently. The road, which opens on July 14 this year, will close again in October. Here, the Norwegians expect the tourist season to be over.

If it's cool roads you're looking for for your next do-it-yourself vacation, Trollstigen is fortunately not the only alternative to the fall of Denmark.

We've put together a bunch of routes you should drive on before you die. Or at best have to surrender your driving license due to age. Read more about them all here .
