Nobody bothers the 4-cylinder C63 AMG – new Mercedes gets V8

Mercedes' German dealers are finding it more than difficult to sell the 4-cylinder C63 AMG. So now the V8 returns.

Mercedes thought it was going one way. Namely in the direction of fewer cylinders, less combustion and ultimately total electrification.

But the customers have spoken. In fact, they have disappeared. At least when it comes to the four-cylinder C63 AMG. Both BMW and Audi's cars are more interesting, say the Mercedes dealers.

So now the brand from Stuttgart is taking the consequences. Not in the C63 AMG, it still only has four cylinders, but in the new CLE 63.

That's what Autocar writes.

The media points out that it is a more than sluggish demand for four-cylinder AMGs, which now means a change of attitude in the management corridors.

Therefore, the upcoming CLE AMG gets the 'old-known' four-litre V8 engine added with a little mild hybrid technology. This pushes the performance up to 585 horsepower.

Something else is that Mercedes has already decided that the upcoming CLE 53 will have six cylinders. And it will of course create more angry than happy customers when 4 cylinders cost more than six.

Markus Schäfer, head of Mercedes' development department, now admits that they have 'looked at the sales figures' and that from now on it is the customers who decide the direction for Mercedes.

The news about the V8 engine's rebirth is not the only one from Mercedes. The brand has just thrown its entire strategy on electric cars on the floor at its annual general meeting. Read more about it here .

Mercedes is not the only car brand in a hurry to withdraw otherwise grand plans to build exclusively electric cars.

But in fact this sort of thing also happens on a smaller scale. At Aston Martin, it was thought that they said goodbye to the V12 engine in 2022. Now it is coming again. Read more about it here.
