New figures: Majority will ban motorists from washing cars by hand

According to a new Swedish report, the number of times motorists wash their cars by hand has increased significantly over the past three years. But it must be prohibited, the majority believes.

Today, there is no law that prohibits washing a car on the street or in the intersection, neither in Denmark nor Sweden.

Some municipalities in Sweden have, however, introduced a ban on hand washing the car if it is not done in places with the right filtration conditions. The fine is SEK 10,000.

And now a new survey, the Big Car Wash Report 2024 , shows that 58 percent of Swedes will ban people from washing cars at home.

At home, the Radical Left party already wanted in 2015 to follow the Swedes' example and ban motorists from washing their cars.

– I actually already thought it was illegal, said the former Member of Parliament and environment spokesperson Lone Loklindt (R) to TV2 in 2015.

In the same year, however, the Environment Agency categorically refused to ban Danes from washing cars by hand. At the time, the argument was that Danes in general are already aware that harmful substances must not be poured into drains.

Although it is not directly illegal to wash cars by hand in Denmark, there may still be – similar to Sweden – local bans. Some local plans – typically in connection with new buildings – may require specially designed areas for this kind of thing.

Here at home, the car owners' organization FDM is apparently not too keen on their members washing their cars themselves.

In fact, the organization recommends that motorists limit themselves to doing this sort of thing 2 to 4 times a year. The rest must, FDM believes, take place in a laundry room set to the cheapest program and with undercarriage liability selected.

But what do you say? Do you want to stop washing the car by hand? Or could you never think of driving the car in anything other than a car wash? Join the debate on Boosted's Facebook page.
