Most municipalities will not introduce zero emission zones

They have been allowed. Even so, the vast majority of Denmark's 98 municipalities say no to introducing the zero-emission zones that come into force on 1 January 2025.

The vast majority of municipalities refuse to introduce zero-emission zones in the near future. Among them, a municipality like Odense has clearly said no. Read more about it here .

A survey carried out by MobilityWatch shows that out of 45 municipalities surveyed, 39 municipalities have refused to implement zero emission zones within the next three years. Six municipalities are undecided, while none have concrete plans to establish the zones.

At the same time, another survey shows that half of the Danes do not see the point of these very restrictive zones.

Neither Aarhus nor Copenhagen, which have otherwise expressed an interest in zero-emission zones, participated in the investigation. Copenhagen has plans for a zone in the medieval city, while Aarhus is considering it as part of a green mobility plan. Odense, on the other hand, has dropped the idea.

However, the survey shows that four municipalities expect to establish zero-emission zones before 2030.

The possibility of establishing zero-emission zones arose after a parliamentary majority gave the municipalities permission to establish a zone in a defined area for a three-year trial period.

Although there is no broad support for zero-emission zones in Denmark yet, they are on the way in several places abroad. Gitte Seeberg, CEO director of AutoBranchen Danmark, believes that dealers should be aware of the development, as the zones can affect car sales and people's choice of drive.

Experience from environmental zones in the largest cities, where older diesel cars without particle filters are allowed access, shows that regulation of traffic can influence consumer behaviour.

However, there is no doubt that the government wants to make it more difficult to be a driver in Denmark. At least a driver with a free choice. Recently, Tax Minister Rasmus Stoklund (S) announced that he will enforce a new law on electric cars. He wants to look at that already in the spring of 2025.
