In these municipalities, Danes' cars are the oldest

In 20 years, the Danish fleet has gone from being one of Europe's oldest to one of the absolute youngest. Still, there is a big difference in the age of the cars from municipality to municipality, new calculations show.

There are significant differences in the average age of cars depending on the region in Denmark. The o-municipalities in particular tend to have the oldest car fleet.

Òro tops the list with the highest average age of cars, which in 2024 has increased to 14,624 years. This position was also held by Æro the year before, although with a slightly lower average age of 14.15 years.

Samso follows suit with an average age of 14,035 years, again with an increase from previous years, when the average was 13,749 years.

Bornholm and Langeland occupy the following places. So the trend is clear: Out of the 13 municipalities with the oldest car fleet, 12 of them are o-municipalities.

According to Troels Meier, director of Autoparts24, there are several factors that can explain this development.

– Firstly, on several of the islands, the car must only be used for shorter distances, and at the same time the economy probably plays a role in the drivers in the individual municipalities.

– I also have the feeling that the car may not be a status symbol to the same extent as it is elsewhere in the country, he says in a press release .

Nationally, the average age of private cars has also increased in recent years. In 2022 the average age was 9.0 years, in 2023 it rose to 9.4 years, and in 2024 it has reached 10.1 years.

The increase comes after almost 20 years, when the average age of Danes' cars has only fallen. Troels Meier notes that there may be some positive aspects to this development.

– In general, the number of scrapped cars has fallen significantly in recent years, and at the same time, the high prices of used cars have made it more attractive to keep a car running.

– And it is positive in the sense that the car's total environmental impact decreases the longer it is in use, he says.
