Hongqi SUV surprises with top marks: Safety is top notch

The large electric SUV E-HS9 gets 5 stars in Euro NCAP, while the sister model EHS7 is named the safest car of the year in China.

The large electric SUV Hongqi E-HS9 has achieved five stars in Euro NCAP's latest safety test. This is the highest rating a car can receive in the European safety rating, and marks the brand's entry into the safe luxury car market.

At the same time, the smaller sister model, EHS7 , has just been honored with the title “The Safest Car 2024” at the China Auto Awards – a clear underlining that Hongqi is investing heavily in safety across the model range.

The Hongqi E-HS9 performed particularly well in the child safety category of the test, achieving maximum points as both six- and ten-year-old test dummies were effectively protected in both frontal and side impacts.

Euro NCAP also highlights the car's stable cabin structure, which in tests resisted deformation during heavy collisions.

Adult occupant protection was rated as very high, and the car scored close to the maximum in side impacts.

Brand Manager in Denmark, Alexander Bachmann, says: “It is a strong recognition that Euro NCAP has given the E-HS9 a blue seal of approval. We are particularly pleased with the good performance in the child safety category – for us it is not just about technology, but about safety in everyday life,” he says.

Advanced safety technology as standard in Hongqi

The E-HS9 is equipped with a range of driver assistance systems as standard, including:

  • Automatic emergency brake
  • Adaptive cruise control with lane and steering assist
  • Blind spot alarm – also when opening doors
  • Fatigue monitoring with eye tracking
  • Rear and cross traffic collision warning
  • Warning when reversing

Several of the functions work together to monitor the traffic around the car and warn the driver in time – or actively intervene to avoid accidents.

Safety is integrated into both the car's electronics and construction, and according to the manufacturer, the technology plays a crucial role in the car's overall safety level.

New Hongqi model named the safest car of the year in China

The new EHS7 also builds on the brand's focus on safety. The SUV, which is slightly smaller than the E-HS9, has been named “The Safest Car 2024” at the China Auto Awards – a recognized award ceremony in the Chinese market.

The EHS7 is packed with advanced safety systems, including:

  • Front Cross Traffic Warning
  • Lane Change Assist
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Pedestrian protection system

The model is developed to respond quickly and accurately to complex traffic situations and is expected to be tested by Euro NCAP later in 2025.

According to the manufacturer, the good results in both Europe and China should be seen as part of the brand's strategy to position itself at the top end of the electric SUV market – both in terms of comfort, technology and safety.

Hongqi imports into Denmark are handled by Wismo Group , formerly known as KW Bruun Import. The group is also responsible for importing car brands such as Peugeot, Opel, Fiat and Alfa Romeo.
