Formula 1 is considering new engines from 2030 – for the sake of the fans

Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali now says he is open to discussing new engines from 2030.

The V6 engines that the Formula 1 field has featured since 2014 have never been a favorite among motorsport fans.

So now the sport is trying to accommodate people. So a little. Because according to the Formula 1 organization's director Stefano Domenicali, nothing will happen until 2030 at the earliest.

By that time, the Formula 1 cars will have cards with a V6 engine for 16 years. But fans and people inside Formula 1 itself have complained about the engines ever since they arrived in 2014, replacing the previous V8s.

And even if there is a new engine regulation on the way in 2026, which, among other things, is what Audi has agreed to, the V6 engine with hybrid assistance just does not live up to expectations.

Especially not among fans. This is particularly evident in the warm-up classes, which follow Formula 1. Here there is more 'noise' to follow in Formula 2.

In the US, the hybrid rollout for the current 2.2-liter V6 engines has also been delayed for a very long time. Precisely because of similar complaints.

In an interview with several media immediately ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix this weekend, Domenicali revealed that much depends on the synthetic petrol the Formula 1 cars will be running on from 2026.

Because if it is a success, Formula 1 will be willing to look at whether to drop the hybrid engines for 'something else'

– This is a consideration I have made myself. But I have not yet discussed it with the teams, although it has been discussed with the FIA (the international motorsport organisation, ed.).

– If the synthetic fuels work, we need to consider whether we should continue with the hybrid technology, or whether there are better solutions out there, says Stefano Domenicali according to Motorsport.com .

Something Formula 1, on the other hand, is not very keen on letting into the sport is a new, American team. In any case, their application has been rejected. Read more about it here .
