Ford recalls 500,000 cars with dangerous gear shifting

Ford is now recalling more than half a million copies of the F-150 pickup because the car itself shifts down to 1st gear. And that's not the only problem.

Ford will potentially calibrate 552,000 versions of the F-150 pickup with new software.

A fault has been found in the model, which means that the gearbox can unexpectedly and without warning shift down into first gear.

This is what the American traffic safety authorities write on their website .

Ford has so far registered 482 'incidents' which can be related to the problematic gear change. In two of the cases, people must have been injured, and in one case the downshift caused an accident.

Among the complaints are F-150 owners who write that their cars suddenly and unexpectedly downshifted, so that in several cases they were running short.

– I was going 75 miles (120 km/h) when my car downshifted four times. The first two times a car behind me had to take evasive maneuvers to avoid a collision, reads one of the published complaints to the authorities.

And that's not all recalls related to the Ford pickup this time around. Ford's technicians also have to look at 159 cars from 2021 because the taillights don't work. That problem has arisen after the car brand sent out a software update to the cars.

Ford has generally not had a good 2024 so far. At least not when it comes to recalls. On the contrary, the brand has set a boring record in the number of recalls. Read more about it here .
