First city in the world to ban advertising for petrol cars

As the first city in the world, The Hague, located in the Netherlands, bans all advertisements for petrol and diesel cars. However, the ban is aimed at more than cars.

In the Dutch city of The Hague, from 1 January 2025 it will be prohibited to advertise petrol and diesel cars.

However, the ban does not only apply to petrol and diesel cars, but to all products that are 'substantially based on or manufactured using fossil fuels'.

It is the city council in The Hague, the third largest city in the Netherlands, which decided to vote through the ban on Thursday last week.

In concrete terms, this means that advertising for the vast majority of cars will be prohibited throughout the city. At least on outdoor areas.

The city council of The Hague has adopted two proposals to ban fossil advertising on outdoor areas, city council spokesman Jordy Kruse told the AFP news agency on Friday last week.

The first proposal informs advertising agencies that fossil fuel advertising is not permitted, while the second bans all fossil fuel advertising in public spaces, says Kruse.

City council politician Leonie Gerritsen, who is elected for the so-called 'animal party', hopes that the new ban will send a clear signal.

– We hope that this law will also send a signal to other cities to do the same to combat climate change, she says.

However, The Hague does not go further than Ethiopia does. The whole country has decided to completely ban the import of all diesel and petrol cars. However, it has nothing to do with climate. Read more about it here .
