Environmental zones are killing these diesel cars in Denmark

There have been significantly fewer of the oldest diesel cars in Denmark, after the rules in the so-called environmental zones have been tightened.

On 1 October 2023, it was forbidden for diesel cars without particle filters to enter the Danish environmental zones. If it still happens, the owners will be fined 1,500 kroner.

And it has a clear effect. This is shown by a new evaluation carried out by DCE – National Center for the Environment and Energy under Aarhus University for the Danish Environmental Agency.

The number of diesel cars without particle filters in the environmental zones has fallen. And that already in the week leading up to the tightening was implemented.

From the fact that 2,500 older diesel cars were in the environmental zones, the figure is down to 800 of this type of corvette in the dock. However, it is still stalls worth DKK 1.2 million every single day of the week.

The fifth environmental zones in Denmark have been established in Copenhagen, Frederiksberg, Aarhus, Odense and Aalborg. And more tightening is on the way.

From 1 October, diesel cars must either meet the Euro 5 emission standard or be equipped with a particulate filter to be allowed to drive in the environmental zones. This excludes even more Danish diesel cars from the roads.

More diesel cars, even if they don't have very many years under their belts, cannot be provided with particle filters. This applies, among other things, to certain Kia models. Read more about it here.

Already in April this year, however, it was clear that not all diesel drivers have understood that their cars are not necessarily allowed to be on the roads. More than 10,000 times fines have been issued for violating the ban.

However, there are also diesel cars without a particle filter, which the environmental zones must not crack down on. The owners can go crazy in them as much as they want. Read more here .
