Volkswagen's new Volkswagen is not the upcoming ID.2 at all. Instead, it is an even smaller sibling that will save the entire brand from economic ruin.
Volkswagen is having a tough time at the moment. So tough, in fact, that the chief financial officer says the brand will run out of money in two or three years. Now an even smaller electric car than the upcoming ID.2 is going to save the day.
And now several media outlets are reporting that Volkswagen will soon unveil the electric car ID.1, which will be marketed under the slogan ID.EVERY1. An electric take on a Polo-sized car.
The price is difficult to speculate on. But according to Carmoses.com , which also covered the story, the car will start at a price of 17,000 euros.
That's equivalent to 126,000 Danish kroner. The question is whether the Germans can afford to sell cars at that price. For comparison, the probably only slightly larger ID.2 will cost 200,000 in Denmark.
But cars will have to be churned out at a furious pace right from the start if Volkswagen is not to collapse. To temporarily keep the whole business together in Wolfsburg, the chairman of the board has said he will close two car factories in Germany.
This is the first time Volkswagen has ever done this. In addition, 35,000 positions will be cut over the next few years.
Those who remain must also agree to take a very deep pay cut. Blume, who personally receives over 70 million kroner in pay per year, will not take such a deep pay cut himself.
On the list of car factories that Volkswagen wants to get rid of is the old Trabant plant in the eastern German city of Zwickau. Here, the VW Group currently builds everything from the ID.3 and ID.4 to the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Cupra Born. But that's about to end.
