Electric car exploded in underground garage – burned for 8 hours

Police in South Korea now confirm that an electric Mercedes exploded in a garage. 21 people had to go to hospital and 70 cars were damaged.

A burning electric car underground is probably many people's nightmares. In South Korea, it has actually happened. An explosion in the Mercedes EQE damaged 70 cars and sent 21 people to hospital on Thursday morning this week.

– It has been confirmed that the burned car is an electric Mercedes-Benz, the police in South Korea said.

That's what Korea JoongAng Daily writes.

Surveillance images from the scene show how white roe suddenly starts to spill out of the car. A few seconds later, the entire car has exploded and is engulfed in flames.

According to South Korean media, rescue workers had to evacuate hundreds of residents from the property immediately after the explosion. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured.

However, 21 people had to go to hospital because they may have or have inhaled poison roe. One of them is a firefighter, while seven of those who were briefly treated are children.

According to emergency services, around 70 cars parked near the Mercedes were damaged when the car exploded. The fire was only fully extinguished after 8 hours.

The Mercedes importer in South Korea is aware that the accident has occurred. But they haven't wanted to say much about it yet.

We cannot confirm details of exact model and batteries at this time. We take this very seriously and will do our best to cooperate with the fire authorities to determine the exact cause, a spokesperson told Korea JoongAng Daily.

Later, however, the Mercedes importer expressed its 'deepest regret' to the residents of the complex and the surrounding area, which were affected by the explosion and subsequent fire.
