Do you have this equipment in the car? Stops working in December

The Spotify Car Thing will officially stop working entirely in December. The streaming service is simply killing their only hardware.

Spotify is music and software. At least that's how it was, until the Swedish company made the little 'Car Thing' in February 2022. The purpose was to give drivers, especially older cars, the opportunity to stream music.

But now it's over.

The production of the small device was already discontinued in October 2022, and by December of this year, Spotify is making sure that already existing devices are rendered useless.

That's what Business Insider writes.

On its own website, Spotify writes that Car Thing is being killed in an attempt to streamline the business.

– We agree that the decision may seem disappointing to some. But it enables us to focus on the development of new functions, which will ultimately make the experience of Spotify better for all users, says the company.

Car Thing officially stops working on December 9, 2024. That's a Monday, if you're extra curious.

Spotify recommends that everyone who has a Car Thing, for which they have otherwise paid 90 dollars corresponding to 620 Danish kroner, reset the device. From here it can be handed in to the local recycling station, which will dispose of it.

Spotify also writes that it currently has no plans for a replacement for Car Thing. However, several owners have already found that their devices can be 'rooted'.

In this way, users can have full control of the device. The method, which is also found on phones and tablets, means that you can install other software.

That said, some Car Thing users have already figured out how to keep their devices alive. Also after 9 December 2024.
