Danish drivers don't know them – now 20,000 have to be replaced

There are 120,000 of them along Danish roads. Now a harsh winter means that 20,000 curb posts face replacement. Twice as many as otherwise in a whole year.

Many Danish drivers drive right past them every day. And that without actually knowing what the edge stakes mean.

But the small red-and-white marking poles are a great help to the Road Directorate. When the poles are not exactly 'down' from wind and weather.

As has been the case in many cases during the winter we have just come out of. At the Norwegian Road Administration, you can usually make do with replacing 10,000 curb posts a year. In 2024, that number will double.

– When the winter has been hard, a lot of snow has to be removed from the roads. Snowplows and sweepers take care of that, and when the piles of snow are sent out onto the side of the road, it naturally goes over the edge posts, says department head Bent Nielsen from the Norwegian Road Directorate to the media.

The curb bollards pass many motorists every single day. And in many cases completely without thinking that the small pieces of plastic are actually of great help. Read more about why here .

However, the function of the curb posts is not the only thing Danes apparently have difficulty understanding behind the wheel.

A survey, which the monthly magazine Samvirke is behind, shows that one in four Danes has no idea what a simple traffic sign for minimum speed means.

It is even worse in other places and with other symbols in traffic. In fact, it is so bad that the penalty is not just DKK 2,000 in fines. It also triggers a clip. Read more about it here .
