Danes bought new cars for DKK 67 billion in 2023

Danes bought more and more expensive cars in 2023. Figures from Statistics Denmark show this. The SUVs are especially popular.

Although the car industry is challenged on several parameters these days, the Danes have not lost their desire for cars.

Especially the new cars are a hit. This is shown by figures from Statistics Denmark.

The statistics reveal that last year, when you add passenger cars and vans together, Danes spent a whopping DKK 67 billion. In those figures, Statistics Denmark has, however, included taxes and VAT.

Still, this is an increase of 29 percent. Or what corresponds to DKK 15.4 billion more than the year before.

A total of 173,000 new cars were sold in Denmark last year. They cost an average of DKK 389,000. By comparison, 149,000 new cars hit the roads in 2022. They cost an average of DKK 347,000.

De Danske Bilimportorer has also noticed that there have been more cars on the roads. Not just here at home, but throughout Europe.

– Car sales in the EU have long been in a good mood, which has been needed on top of a couple of challenging years.

– We are pleased that there is good activity in several European markets and that the growth in EU car sales has continued into February , "says the organisation's managing director Mads Rorvig

If you have followed the development just a little, it is also not surprising that Statistics Denmark points to the SUV as the Danes' favorite.

Last year, Tesla with the Model Y had so much momentum among the Danes that the American electric car took a 37-year-old record from Opel. Overall, the share of electric SUVs made up almost 40 percent of the new cars Danes bought last year.

But Tesla in particular is facing a number of challenges in the Danish market during the first months of 2024. The Danes have new favorites on four wheels. Read more about it here .
