Cyclists use fake speed cameras to trick drivers

Cyclists should use speed alarms like Saphe and Ooono to report false checks on highways and thus force drivers to slow down, the company believes.

Many drivers drive too fast on Danish roads. Cyclists will now try to do something about this problem. They will use popular tools such as Saphe and Ooono.

The company KXNGS encourages reporting of false speed checks via speed alerts. The goal is to get drivers to reduce their speed.

Road cyclists are particularly vulnerable road users. Many routes lack cycle paths, which increases the risk.

The company behind the new crackdown on motorists is KXNGS. They sell equipment for cyclists and announced the plan in a press release.

KXNGS will actively report speed checks even if they are not present. They will use the known traffic alert systems for this purpose.

The fake reports will be placed at selected locations. They will be along popular bike routes across the country. KXNGS encourages other cyclists to do the same.

Will fight all drivers

The background to the initiative is the high speeds on the country roads. Statistics indicate that this is a widespread problem, especially in Jutland.

Figures from the Danish Road Directorate for 2024 show a trend. Almost half of drivers drive faster than the permitted 80 kilometers per hour on Jutland's country roads on average.

Additional data shows that almost 14 percent exceed 90 kilometers per hour. This is on the same stretches of highway.

Lars Hemming is co-founder of KXNGS. He speaks about the background to the initiative.

"Drivers and cyclists have a shared responsibility for creating safe traffic.

– Road cyclists are extremely vulnerable due to the lack of cycle paths, and the combination of high speed and lack of attention can have fatal consequences.

  • – With this initiative we want to focus on the problem and get drivers to slow down, says Lars Hemming.

KXNGS' plan with Saphe and Drive One

Normally, traffic alerts like Saphe, Drive One and Ooono work differently. Drivers use them to warn each other about real speed checks.

The system is based on user reports. A driver sees a control and presses a button on their alarm device or app.

Other users nearby then receive a warning. This often prompts drivers to slow down near the checkpoint and can help avoid stalls.

KXNGS is a company founded by cycling enthusiasts. The company sells various products aimed at cyclists, including nutritional supplements.

With the new initiative, the company takes on a more activist role. Their stated goal is to improve road safety for cyclists on the roads.

Debates about road safety, technology and responsibility often fill the media. Tools like Saphe and Ooono are dividing the waters, and in Norway the government even wants to ban the technology following the German model. Read more about it here .
