Copenhagen famously closes the road to cars after 5 years

The plans have been in the works for a full five years. But it is only now that Vesterbrogade in front of Tivoli in Copenhagen is partially closed to cars. Initially for 6 months.

The messy city council in Copenhagen has had the plan lying in the drawer for five years. But it is only now that the municipality closes Vesterbrogade in front of Tivoli.

Initially, there will be a partial closure for cars for six months. This is written by TV2 Kosmopol .

The closure of the road in Copenhagen comes at the same time that the municipality introduces several parking bans in the capital.

According to TV2 Kosmopol's information, a larger, green area must be created between RÃ¥dhuspladsen and Bernstorffsgade, and this therefore pushes the cars out.

However, not everyone wants to participate in this kind of thing. Not even if the city government in Copenhagen wants to go much further than just closing individual roads and streets to car traffic.

As early as May 2023, the capital municipality floated the idea of banning all cars with combustion engines. But that made the small enclave municipality of Frederiksberg say clearly no.

Mayor Michael Vindfeldt (S) said at the time – also to TV2 Kosmopol – that he will not participate in throwing the cars out.

– I think it's good that Copenhagen could talk to us a little, so that we don't lie like a kind of West Berlin in there and get a little squeezed.

Back to today, in the new budget agreement for Copenhagen's municipality, a total of DKK 13 million has been set aside to make it possible for cars to park on Vesterbrogade. The exception is electric buses.

But there has also been a political desire to throw them out. But according to Radikale Venstre's Christopher Rohl Andersen, there has not been broad enough support for that. Although he would like to see the buses find other routes around Copenhagen.

In addition to road closures, the city government in Kobehavn will be allowed to introduce more than one so-called zero emission zone, which prohibits everything but electric cars, in the capital. However, it requires an exception from the current legislation and thus a yes from a majority in Christiansborg.
