Disagreements between BMW and BYD have ended up in court. This time, the Germans are accusing the Chinese of stealing the model name.
BMW has once again taken the Chinese car brand to court. The Germans believe that the Chinese are once again stealing with their arms and legs.

According to the Munich-based brand, BYD's use of the M6 name may mislead car buyers into believing otherwise about the product's authenticity and quality.
The summons against BYD was received by the Central Jakarta Commercial Court on February 26, 2025. It is not yet known when the trial itself will begin.

But this is not the first time that BYD has looked too much over the shoulders of its Western competitors.
Between 2003 and 2007, the Chinese used a logo that was an almost one-to-one copy of BMW's classic propeller.
During the same period, the Chinese copied Mercedes' design language. Something that was particularly evident on the BYD S8 convertible, which was presented at the Shanghai Motor Show in 2006.
That same year, cars that looked like copies of models from Toyota, Daihatsu, Honda, Buick, Subaru and BMW could also be seen on the brand's website.
Here at home, we first saw something for BYD in 2022.
But due to very high prices, the brand has not yet caught on with Danish customers. During February, the Chinese sold just 144 cars in Denmark.
