There are no plans for a new Audi R8, says Volkswagen North America boss Kjell Gruner. At least not as we know it.
Audi won't be allowed to build a mid-engined supercar in the style of the now-retired R8 model. At least not if Volkswagen North America boss Kjell Gruner has his way.
Kjell Gruner himself told the journalists who showed up at Audi's stand at the New York Auto Show earlier this month.
This is what Motor1 writes.
The Audi R8 made its entry into the brand's model range in 2007. The car debuted with a 4.2-liter V8 engine without turbocharging.
It was not until April 2009 that the in many ways more iconic V10 engine with a displacement of 5.2 liters was added. The V10 engine was the only remaining option when the R8 was retired last year.
And despite speculation in both the Danish and international press, the top model in Audi's model range is not returning.
As an almost insulting thin band-aid, Kjell Gruner promises that the GTI models will be allowed to survive. The same goes for the R models, even though it's something VW is having a hard time selling.
According to Kjell Gruner, however, the weak sales are only due to the fact that Volkswagen recently facelifted the GTI model, and that customers have only now started receiving the cars.
Not a single Audi R8 was registered in Denmark in 2024. Perhaps because the car already cost 1.2 million Danish kroner from the factory.
