Apple delays crucial system for cars

Apple actually has a new version of Carplay ready. But now the launch, which was supposed to take place in 2024, is being postponed indefinitely.

Apple's next-generation CarPlay, unveiled nearly two years ago, is still a long way off. The system, which Apple promised would be available in 2024, has yet to launch, and it's unclear when it will arrive.

CarPlay, and its competitor Android Auto, are systems that mirror selected apps from a smartphone to a car's infotainment screen. However, Apple's new generation of CarPlay is far more ambitious.

The new version of CarPlay is designed to take over all of the car's screens, including the dashboard and any screens for rear seat passengers.

This is what Autoevolution writes.

Apple has faced resistance from several automakers who are reluctant to give Apple so much control over the car's systems.

Mercedes-Benz is one of the automakers that has expressed concerns about Apple's new system.

– To give up the entire main screen in the cabin, and in our case also the passenger screen, to someone else? Here the answer is no.

– If you want to create a superior customer experience, you have to think about it as a whole, and only the car manufacturer can tie it all together, Mercedes' director Ola Källenius has previously said in an interview.

It's unclear which automakers will end up implementing the new generation of CarPlay.

Porsche and Aston Martin have indicated they will support the system but have not announced a launch date, while General Motors will keep it out of their cars entirely.

About Apple CarPlay:

  • Apple's new generation of CarPlay system can control more functions than today's systems.
  • Including air conditioning, car settings and electric car charging.

Apple's delay could be due to a lack of interest from automakers. It could also be technical challenges that are delaying the launch. Whatever the reason, it's clear that Apple's vision of a fully integrated CarPlay experience is further in the future than initially thought.
