Another country raises the speed limit on the highway

The Czech Republic is raising the speed limit on motorways to 150 km/h from this year. The Netherlands is not giving it much of a boost and is once again allowing 130 km/h.

The Netherlands has raised the speed limit on certain motorways. Drivers are now allowed to drive 130 km/h during the day on three specific routes, up from the previous limit of 100 km/h.

The new 130 km/h signs have already been installed. They are located along the well-known Afsluitdijk. They are also installed on the A6 motorway between Lelystad Noord and Ketelbrug.

The section of the A7 between Winschoten and the German border is also included, where drivers can now legally drive faster during daytime hours.

This is what Autovisie writes.

The plans don't stop there, however. It is expected that the A37 between Holsloot and Zwartemeer will also get the higher speed limit later.

Since March 2020, the general rule has been different. At that time, the maximum daytime speed was reduced to 100 km/h on most Dutch motorways.

Minister sees potential in higher speed

However, in the evening and at night, it has still been permitted to drive up to 130 km/h. This rule has not been changed with the new adjustments.

Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management, Barry Madlener, is positive about the development, indicating that the current changes are just the beginning.

The authorities are actively investigating several options. They are looking into whether speeds can be increased on other routes around the Netherlands.

A key challenge in the process, however, is environmental considerations. It must be ensured that the set limits for nitrogen emissions are met.

As the maximum speed increases, nitrogen deposition increases slightly. An increase from 100 km/h to 130 km/h has a measurable effect.

Speed limits in the Netherlands and Europe

This therefore requires careful consideration by the authorities. They must balance the desire for higher speeds with the need to protect the environment.

The Netherlands now has a more differentiated approach to speed limits on motorways. Some specific sections allow higher speeds during the day than the general level.

The new Dutch rules mark an adjustment to the policy introduced in 2020. The focus is on selected routes where higher speeds are considered possible without exceeding environmental limits.

For drivers, this means a potential time saving on the affected routes. However, this only applies during daytime hours.

Are you interested in rules about speed limits and potential fines at home and abroad? You should know that this kind of thing hits hard. However, the EU could not agree to introduce a special Danish law in all countries. Read more about it here .

While both the Dutch and the Czechs are raising the speed limit on the highway, there is a debate here at home about whether the Danes should be banned from driving faster than 90 km/h. Find this and many other exciting stories on Boosted every day.
