AI camera gone wild – sent 3,800 illegal parking stalls

A series of artificial intelligence cameras set up to monitor parking lots in New York went so far awry that 3,800 parking stalls have to be cancelled.

AI cameras went wild in New York, printing 3,800 parking tickets, but the majority were illegal, although the artificial intelligence is designed to ensure more effective parking enforcement.

However, a serious error occurred which resulted in almost 900 motorists being given wrongful stalls. Many of these drivers even received photo documentation showing that they had done nothing wrong.

Motorists were sent the above-mentioned stalls after these had been checked by the parking company's own, real employees.

The problem arose because the cameras installed on the city's buses were not properly programmed for the routes they were supposed to monitor.

NBC New York writes that.

On some stretches, legally parked cars were misidentified as illegally parked. While the cameras on other routes issued stalls, because the full surveillance had even come into effect.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which is behind the system, acknowledged the error and subsequently refunded the wrongful fines. As well as the stalls that have not yet been paid are cancelled.

The AI cameras are part of a larger effort to optimize traffic in New York, where parking violations in bus lanes are a well-known problem.

Earlier this year, the MTA said that it plans to put the cameras with the artificial brains on 1,000 of the buses in New York. And that before the end of 2024.

A further 1,000 cameras are expected to be installed around the city in the course of 2025. The purpose of the technology is to keep bus lanes free of illegally parked cars and thus ensure more punctual bus journeys.

Although systems like these can be effective for monitoring and enforcement, the many failures are proof that artificial intelligence can and does get it wrong all the time.

Software errors and incorrect programming can have serious consequences for citizens who are affected for no reason. Parking control is far from the only thing AI cameras are used for.

The camera trap with artificial intelligence has already been invented and put to work. In many ways, this is a piece of technology that interferes much more with motorists' privacy. Read more about it here .
