These cyclists cause more accidents on Denmark's roads

Every third cyclist over the age of 60 is on the roads almost every day. It's a problem. Because the number of accidents is increasing, new figures show.

Every third cyclist over the age of 60 cycles almost every day, and eight out of ten cycle every week, according to information from the Council for Safe Traffic.

But the increase in the number of senior cyclists has also led to more accidents among them. It is particularly worrying that the number of cycling accidents among people over 65 has increased significantly as this age group grows.

In 2009, just over 500 seriously injured cyclists over the age of 65 were registered at the country's emergency departments.

In 2022, the number had increased to over 1,000 according to Statistics Denmark. At the same time, figures from the Road Directorate show that approximately half of all cyclists killed are over 65, and an increasing proportion of accidents involve electric bicycles.

Therefore, the Council for Safe Traffic is now launching a campaign to focus on the need for older cyclists to cycle more safely in traffic.

A review of accidents among senior cyclists reveals that 85% of accidents are solo accidents. Often these accidents happen when the cyclist loses their balance when getting on or off, or when they try to maneuver around obstacles, hit holes in the road or hit curbs.

– Cycling is of great importance for quality of life, health and happiness, and it is therefore important that seniors can cycle safely and safely for as long as possible.

– With the campaign, we show what requires special attention and how to prevent the frequent solo accidents in this age group, says Liv Knoblauch Kofoed-Jensen, senior project manager at the Council for Safe Traffic, in a press release .

Other surveys have previously shown that cyclists are a hated form of traffic. If you ask the drivers, there is nothing more annoying than people on iron horses. Read more about it here .
