Toyota rejects warranty – blames tires for engine fire

Toyota refuses to help a GR Corolla owner whose engine suddenly caught fire. The car brand claims that the car is running on the wrong tyres.

Tire selection is almost a religious issue in the automotive world. But in the US it has meant that a GR Corolla owner has lost his warranty, even if the engine suddenly burst into flames.

There was nothing to do with the car. It's burned up. But Toyota refuses to cover anything under warranty. In this connection, the car brand refers to the tire choice.

It is, the Japanese say, completely wrong. Even though the accident has been captured on video and the owner does nothing wrong immediately because the flames take hold of the car.

Carscoops writes that.

Toyota defends itself with the fact that a GR Corolla must not exceed 136 km/h without first being fitted with 'the correct high-speed tyres'. And then it doesn't really matter what the applicable speed limit is.

– Be sure to consult a tire dealer who can determine whether the tires on your coring vehicle are high-speed tires or not, because you are coring at such speeds, Toyota states in the written disclaimer that the car brand has sent to the owner.

When a car inspector subsequently had a look through the car, it was found that there was a hole in the engine block and that oil had collected around the turbo, on the undercarriage, the exhaust and at the bottom of the engine.

Toyota mentions this well enough in the letter to the Corolla owner. Nevertheless, the Japanese disclaim any responsibility for the accident.

Incidentally, it is not the first time that Toyota has refused to pay out in a warranty case. But it has also happened that the brand has changed its attitude.

As recently as last year, a GR86 owner couldn't get a new engine for his car, even if he didn't break Toyota's warranty policy. The Japanese came to regret it bitterly. Read more about it here .
