New figures: These are the cars most Danes scrap right now

The most scrapped cars in Denmark are also those that were once very popular. This is shown by the latest report from Danish Producer Responsibility.

In 2023, approximately 75,000 cars will be scrapped in Denmark.

This is a drop of almost 25 percent compared to the number of scrapped cars in 2021, when almost 98,000 cars were said to be permanently retired.

However, the downward trend does not seem to have peaked among the Danes, who are increasingly hesitating to send their cars for scrapping. After the first 5 months of 2024, 30,000 cars with Danish number plates will have been scrapped.

This is shown by the latest settlement from Danish Producer Responsibility, which Autoparts24 has obtained access to. This is stated by the company in a press release .

If this trend continues, 2024 will mark the fifth consecutive year of a decline in the number of scrapped cars.

Troels Meier, director of Autoparts24, notes that it is positive that more cars are being repaired and thus kept longer on the roads.

He also points out, however, that many used cars are exported abroad, where they are often not treated correctly for the environment.

– It is positive that we are increasingly choosing to repair the cars and keep them running for longer.

– But conversely, we have also seen how a large number of used cars are exported abroad, where in many cases they are not properly environmentally treated, and this is a problem we have to keep an eye on, he says.

According to the director, the most scrapped car brands reflect the most sold brands in Denmark. Many of the scrapped car models have been popular over the years and have often been named 'Car of the Year'.

– The vast majority of the models obviously have one thing in common, that they have been very popular among the Danes for a number of years.

– Which can be read, among other things, by the fact that several of them have been 'Car of the Year'. At the same time, they have been reliable and worth keeping up to date," he says.

Data from Danish Producer Responsibility, analyzed by Autoparts24, show that the drop in the number of scrapped cars has been significant in absolute terms. However, Meier emphasizes that it is still too early to assess the long-term consequences of this development.
