Media: The Toyota Celica is resurrected as a petrol car

Fans have hoped, and Toyota's chairman has spoken about it at length. Now a new Celica with a petrol engine is on the way, writes the media.

It may well be that Aiko Toyoda, as chairman of the board, has just had to admit that Toyota has cheated. Read more about it here .

But when the 68-year-old car man is not lamenting fraud, he dreams of reviving three models in particular: Supra, Celica and MR2. So far, only one model is alive.

And it may well be on borrowed time. For Japanese BestCar writes that the current Supra, which shares technology with the BMW Z4, is already on its way out. And actually in a little while. Read more about it here.

However, the same media also writes that the development of the 'high-performance' 2-litre petrol engine has been under way behind Toyota's factory walls for several years. And that the brand is now so far advanced that they will be familiar with throwing it in a car.

It must be done with the coupling of a four-wheel drive and shapes like a coupe. In other words, exactly as the Celica model looked when it was last on the market in 2006. Or almost.

Because we have to go back to the sixth generation Celica, which went out of production in 1999, to find a model that also had four-wheel drive to offer. But the one with the coupé shapes lasts all the way.

According to BestCar, there is some indication that Toyota is ready to equip the upcoming 'Celica' with 400 horsepower and couple it to the four-wheel drive 'GR Four' which is already used by the GR Corolla and GR Yaris.

Electric cars are Gazoo Racing, who are probably deeply involved in the project, but not much to talk about. In fact, the head of the department has refused to build such a thing. Read more about it here .
