Assistant systems make drivers worse, Norwegians say

Modern cars have a sea of assistant systems that make life behind the wheel easier. It's just not necessarily very good, says Norway's answer to the Swedish Transport Agency, the State Road Administration.

Assistant systems in modern cars risk creating worse drivers.

That's how precise the announcement is from the State Road Administration in Norway, which has a counterpart to the Norwegian Transport Agency. It is especially the adaptive cruise control and the lane assistant that make drivers less sharp.

– This development gives us many opportunities, but in the long term it can also mean new problems. When the cars can assist the crossing, the driver can become passive and gradually lose his skills, says Vegvesenets Stein-Helge Mundal in a press release .

Stein-Helge Mundal emphasizes that it is important that drivers control their cars, even if they are increasingly assisted by the car's own systems.

– At the National Roads Administration, we are concerned that motorists may lose attention and the ability to take control in critical situations when the car practically does the work itself.

The Norwegians refer to a series of studies from the University of Leeds in England, which show that drivers in certain cases have their eyes on everything but the road when the assistant systems are switched on.

– We are concerned that road users use this type of assistant system as a self-supporting system, and that car manufacturers do not take responsibility for how the systems are used, says Stein-Helge Mundal.

There is also good reason not to just turn your brain on autopilot behind the wheel. Rather the opposite. Because even though new cars are more advanced than ever before, a survey also shows that brand new cars are the worst in 37 years.

In fact, the automotive industry is also facing problems that have never been foreseen. Read more about it here . Some cars are so full of faults that drivers have to cheat them to avoid being inconvenienced unnecessarily. This is, for example, the case in the otherwise brand new Volvo EX30.
