Parking garages risk collapsing due to electric cars

As politicians slouch more and more parking spaces on the street, parking garages are becoming more necessary. But here the electric cars can become a problem.

Electric cars are coming, in fact they are already here. And in a big way.

But it can end up being a big problem. Especially in car parks which are not necessarily sized or built for the weight of modern cars.

This is written by the British newspaper The Telegraph .

– I don't want to sound too alarmist. But there is definitely a risk that some of the older parking garages in poor condition could collapse, says Chris Wapples, structural engineer and parking consultant, to the newspaper.

In the same article, construction experts suggest that the requirements for the weight that a car park must be able to handle increase. And that the maintenance of existing car parks is improved to avoid collapses.

In England alone there are around 6,000 car parks. Most of them already have several years behind them, as they were built back in the 1960s and 70s.

Unfortunately, it has already happened that older car parks have collapsed due to heavy cars. One person died and five others were injured when a New York parking garage collapsed last April.

Unfortunately, the warning from the British came too late. The article was published in the British newspaper just two weeks before the old car park collapsed.

At home, no car parks have collapsed for the time being. But it has happened that the drivers themselves have continued beyond them. Literally like that. It happened i.a. for a car thief in a Citroën C4. It actually also happened in April last year.. Read more about it here .
