Electricity for the electric car is as expensive as diesel, Norwegians say

Putting an electric car in a fast charger is just as expensive as filling up a diesel car, concludes the Norwegian Automobile Association.

– With the current charging price, it is just as expensive to charge an electric car as it is to refuel a diesel car.

So says Nils Sodal, senior communications advisor in the Norwegian NAF in a press release .

The price, the Norwegians say, is on the expensive side if you choose to connect the electric car to a fast charger.

Right now it costs 6.5 Norwegian kroner per kilowatt hours to connect an electric car to a fast charger in Norway. This corresponds to 4.13 Danish kroner.

For a car that covers 1,000 kilometers per month with a consumption of 0.2 kilowatt hours per kilometre, this means a 'fuel expense' of NOK 1,289. The equivalent diesel car will cost NOK 1,320 in fuel alone to keep running for the same period.

However, the electric car is still cheaper. Especially because the electric car – unlike the diesel car – can be refueled at home. And home charging is still significantly cheaper than if the power has to be obtained from a public charging station.

– But not everyone has the opportunity to charge their car at home. It is therefore important that the electricity price is better reflected on the fast charging stations than is the case today, says Nils Sodal.
