Kia develops new gasoline engine with over 300 horsepower

Kia has no intention of giving up on the combustion engine just yet. Now a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine is on the way. It will also be used in electric cars.

Kia's new 2.5T-GDI gasoline engine will be used in regular cars, hybrids and as a generator in electric cars. The South Koreans promise more power and better efficiency.

Kia has unveiled a new engine. It's called the 2.5T-GDI. The engine will be used in several car types and will produce over 300 horsepower.

The new 2.5T-GDI engine is a turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine. Kia unveiled it at its 2025 CEO Investor Day event. The engine will be installed in regular gasoline cars and hybrid cars.

Kia promises technical improvements with the new engine. The engine's ability to utilize heat alone is said to be improved by five percent.

The number of horsepower is also increased significantly. Kia reports an increase of 12 percent. This means an output of over 300 horsepower.

The current engine produces 281 hp in the Kia Sorento. In the Kia K5 GT it delivers 290 hp. Torque is also expected to increase from the current 422 Nm.

Details on Kia's new hybrid and petrol engine

Hybrid cars with the new engine will benefit. Kia promises better acceleration. The transition between the electric motor and the gasoline engine will also be smoother, they say.

The efficiency of the hybrid models is improved by four percent. This is due to a new hybrid setup due to better coupling between the electric and gasoline engines.

The engine will also be used in upcoming EREV models. EREV stands for extended-range electric vehicles. Here, the engine acts as a generator.

The gasoline engine charges the battery in EREVs. It has no mechanical connection to the wheels. This is similar to technologies such as Nissan's E-Power and Ram Ramcharger.

The new petrol and hybrid engines are important for Kia. They will help it reach an ambitious sales target. Kia will sell 4.19 million cars annually by 2030.

Kia's Future Plans: More Sales and More Models

In comparison, Kia sold 3.1 million cars last year. That was a record for the brand. The target for 2030 is therefore a significant increase.

By the end of the decade, Kia will launch 15 new electric vehicles. There will also be 10 new hybrids, including plug-in hybrids.

Kia expects to sell 1.26 million electric cars by 2030. Sales of hybrids and PHEVs are set to reach 1.07 million. The remaining 1.86 million cars will run on gasoline or diesel.

Global production capacity will also need to be increased. Kia aims to produce 4.25 million cars annually by 2030, an increase of 17 percent.

Other news from the investor day included a new electric pickup truck, intended for North America, of which Kia expects to sell 90,000 per year.

Another pickup, the Kia Tasman, is expected to sell 80,000 units per year. The new 2.5T engine supports Kia's broad strategy for the future.
