Sales of used Teslas plummet in Denmark

The numbers only point in one direction. Namely, it is more than difficult to get rid of a used Tesla. At least without losing an awful lot of money in Denmark.

Sales of used Teslas at dealers have more than halved since 2023. Private buyers are now putting three times as many up for sale. Dealer Henrik Thomsen is worried that some buyers are associating Tesla with Elon Musk.

The Danish market for used Teslas has changed significantly. Dealers are experiencing a decline in sales, while private individuals are increasingly putting their Teslas up for sale.

Some potential buyers may hesitate because of the car brand's connection to Elon Musk.

This is what DR writes.

Previously, used Tesla electric cars were in high demand among car dealers. But that picture has now been completely turned upside down. The market is showing clear signs of a decline in interest in used Teslas among professional sellers.

A search on one of the major car portals in Denmark shows a clear trend. The number of used Teslas offered for sale through dealers has fallen by over 50 percent since 2023. That's a significant change in a relatively short time.

At the same time, an opposite trend is seen in the private market. During the same period, the number of Teslas put up for sale by private owners has tripled. This suggests that more private Tesla owners want to sell their car.

Many dealers are feeling the changed situation directly. Globus Biler in Silkeborg is one of those dealers. They have had great success selling used Teslas for several years. But that time is over, says a salesman.

Tesla is more than under pressure on the used market in Denmark

Henrik Thomsen from Globus Biler talks about the changed reality. In recent months, the number of inquiries and real buyers has dropped noticeably. This creates uncertainty for the dealer.

Right now, the dealer has two used Tesla models on sale. They have been for sale for two months. But no buyers have come forward yet.

This is in stark contrast to earlier times. Henrik Thomsen explains the situation.

– Tesla used to be a very, very attractive car.

– All dealers in Denmark were looking for them throughout Europe because they could sell them relatively quickly and because they were in demand." That time is over for now.

The import of used Teslas from abroad has therefore stopped at the car dealer. Henrik Thomsen has no plans to resume imports for the time being. He simply fears being left with unsalable cars.

Dealer fears huge losses on Teslas

The concern is real among dealers. The risk of losing money on used Teslas has become too great. This affects their willingness to buy the cars.

According to Henrik Thomsen, it's not about the quality of the cars. Teslas haven't suddenly become worse vehicles. The cars still have the same specifications and features.

Instead, he points to another possible reason for the declining popularity. Some Danish car buyers increasingly associate the Tesla brand directly with founder Elon Musk. This may have a negative effect for some.

The personal connection to Elon Musk seems to play a role for certain segments of car buyers, influencing their view of the brand and their purchasing interest.

The changing dynamics in the used Tesla market are clear. Dealer hesitation and increasing private supply paint a new picture of Tesla's position in Denmark. The future will show how the market develops further.
