Trump wants to ban electric cars on several US highways

Right now, electric cars in California are allowed to drive in lanes that are otherwise intended for carpooling. But Donald Trump will ban this from September.

Donald Trump is well underway in cleaning up the United States. And he's doing it right down to the state level.

There are many indications that California will be notified that electric cars will not be allowed to drive in lanes on highways that are otherwise intended for carpooling.

Right now, electric cars are exempt from the rule that states that in order to drive in certain lanes on the highway, there must be at least two people in a car.

This is reported by Automotive News .

The Trump administration wants to do away with many of the environmental protection laws that have been passed in the US over time. And here, so-called carpool lanes are the next thing that will be hit, according to Automotive News.

The alternative traffic rules became an option in 1998, and California made it a law in 1999. But now much of that may be a thing of the past. And especially for electric cars.

According to John Swanton, spokesman for the California Air Resource Authority, however, it is a very small concession that drivers will suffer.

According to him, there are already very few drivers who even buy cars that comply with the rules that mean that the special lanes on the highways must be used.

However, carpool lanes are not the only thing the state of California will likely have to do without. It will also introduce a total ban on the sale of gasoline and diesel cars from 2035.

But the federal government will put a stop to that too. Whether it will succeed is unknown. Because Trump is scheduled to step down in 2028, as written in the US Constitution.

By then, he will have served two terms as president of the United States. And then he can't run anymore. However, the Republican president has already started changing the conditions for electric cars in the United States. Read more about it here .
