Norway reaches milestone – has purchased 800,000 electric cars

In Norway, diesel cars still dominate. But now electric cars are reaching a milestone of 800,000. If all are counted, there are 850,000 electric cars in the country.

The most popular electric car in Norway is the Nissan Leaf. Norwegians have bought 67,501 copies of the car over the years. But in total there are now over 800,000 electric cars in Norway.

This is stated by the Norwegian Electric Car Association in a press release .

– If we count absolutely all electric cars, the total number is over 850,000. The exact number of electric passenger cars was 804,363 at the end of February, says the association's secretary general Christina Bru.

The Nissan Leaf is the most popular electric car brand on Norwegian roads. But it is closely followed by the Tesla Model Y, of which Norwegians have 66,740 units.

However, the Norwegian Electric Car Association predicts that the Model Y could overtake the Japanese model. The facelifted American is on its way to Norwegian as well as Danish customers.

Of the 800,000 cars, Nissan is the most popular choice

At the same time, the Nissan Leaf has been discontinued. Production at Nissan's factory in England stopped in February last year, and the remaining assembly lines stopped in August.

A new model with the same name is on the way. But it is not expected to be ready until around 2026. If the car brand is still around then.

The Japanese are in the middle of an economic crisis, which, according to the recently fired CEO Makoto Uchida, cannot be overcome without help.

As it stands now, Nissan will lose 3.8 billion kroner over the course of 2025. The situation may be made worse by the Japanese being unable to reach an agreement on a merger with Honda.

Back in Norway, however, electric cars have also started to become a problem in both cities and parking lots.

The authorities are even blaming the heavier electric cars for wearing out the roads in the capital Oslo. And they have not yet been able or willing to find a solution.

At the same time, electric car owners complain that they are being penalized and have to pay to park because they drive electric cars. Read more about this here .
