Elon Musk: Fears the US is going bankrupt

Elon Musk's new job has cost him over 680 billion kroner. Now he comments on the storm against Tesla in a major interview. He fears the US will go bankrupt.

Bankruptcy. Or rather, state bankruptcy. That's what Elon Musk fears is overtaking the United States.

He says this in a new interview with the TV channel Fox News .

– We are doing the right thing here, there has been a huge waste in government, says Elon Musk.

But Musk hardly took the job as head of the Department of Government Efficiency for personal gain.

On the contrary, he has lost 680 billion of his personal wealth since he tied himself to the Trump administration.

Trump's enormous fortune in danger

Elon Musk's fortune is largely tied up in his companies. Primarily Tesla and SpaceX. And Tesla's share price in particular has plummeted since the change of power in the US. In fact, as much as 48 percent of the brand's value has already disappeared.

Yet Elon Musk persists. Among other things, he believes that there is something completely wrong with the US national debt. Or at least how it is being paid off.

– Our interest payments are higher than our Department of Defense budget, that's what I think was the real wake-up call for me.

– If we don't do something about this, there won't be any money for anything, we'll just pay income tax and how to read a debt and balance it, says Elon Musk.

– It's been a waste of half a trillion dollars here. 150-year-olds are getting benefits, we have 160-year-olds in the system, I didn't know the country was so unhealthy, Musk says in the interview.

The critical questions are sparse. In fact, Musk doesn't get any at all. Not even about how he's handling the leadership opportunity at Tesla. But he does get to say one very important thing.

– I just don't want America to go bankrupt.
