The engine was supposed to be reserved for the new Lamborghini Temerario. But will the 4-liter V8 engine also be used in a new Audi R8, writes Autocar.
Audi's plan for an electric supercar is coming to nothing. Instead, the Germans have decided to resume production of the Audi R8 with a completely new model.
The car will have the same 4-liter V8 engine as found in the Lamborghini Temerario with hybrid assistance and twin turbos.
According to Autocar, the new Audi R8 will be launched at the end of 2027.
After several delays and a single postponement, Audi stopped production of the original R8 last year. The intention was to replace the screaming V10 model with an electric car.
But now Audi, which will, among other things, compete in Formula 1 from 2026, has apparently changed its position, so the new car will have a gasoline engine.
The new Audi R8 could have a whopping 920 horsepower
The engine, which is taken from the Lamborghini Temerario, is combined with plug-in hybrid technology. This means that the upcoming R8 could be the most powerful road car Audi has ever had in its model range.
The upcoming model will feature a number of technological elements already found in Lamborghini's latest supercar, but the most interesting thing is the engine.
The new Audi R8 will be equipped with a twin-turbo V8 engine that alone produces 800 horsepower. Add to that the muscle of three electric motors. In the Temerario, it's a total output of 920 horsepower.
The Audi R8 will have four-wheel drive, with the electric motors driving the front axle, while the V8 engine is located in the middle and assisted by an additional electric motor driving the rear wheels.
When the assembly line stopped in April 2024, Audi had built 44,418 copies of the first two R8 generations.
According to Autocar, the new model is planned to be manufactured at Audi's Böllinger Höfe plant in Germany, which is also where the last Audi R8 with a V10 engine was assembled.

Audi is far from the only one holding back when it comes to electric cars. Aston Martin should have expanded its model range with an electric car long ago. But that is no longer the case.
Rimac, which currently owns Bugatti, is no longer so sure about the dominance of electric cars. People with a lot of money still prefer cars with combustion engines.
Maserati has admitted the same thing. The upcoming electric car MC20 Folgore must be dropped altogether because there are not enough customers. The Italian brand's customers also will not pay the money that management believes the car should cost.
