Maserati drops new car – customers hate electric cars

A 11 billion kroner investment for Maserati will not come to fruition. So now the electric car MC20 Folgore is being dropped because customers hate electric cars, says the boss.

Production of the electric Maserati MC Folgore is stalling. And according to management, it's because of one thing – customers hate electric cars.

The lack of interest in electric cars is the direct reason for the plans being shelved. Although the name 'Folgore' means lightning in Italian, interest in such a sports car has proven to be minimal.

– Our super sports car customers want to drive cars with powerful combustion engines, says Maserati.

The electric model, the MC Folgore, was originally intended to play a spearhead role in the program that would have transformed Maserati into an all-electric brand.

But customers are not interested in that. At least they have not been willing to pay what Maserati believes the cars are worth. Not even though the factory promised three electric motors and a total output of 760 horsepower.

Maserati's customers hate electric cars – prefer powerful petrol cars

According to a statement from Maserati, quoted by Car and Driver , market research has shown that their customers would rather have cars with internal combustion engines.

– Market research for the super sports car segment and especially for MC20 customers has shown that they are very keen to drive with powerful combustion engines.

– They are not ready to switch to electric cars in the foreseeable future, Maserati states.

It hasn't helped customers that Maserati has spent a fortune getting former soccer star David Beckham to advertise the electric sports car.

The first copies of the MC Folgore were supposed to roll out of the factory in Modena this year. But instead, the money will be spent on an update of the V6 engine with the twin turbochargers in the regular MC20.

Maserati is one of the Stellantis brands that is having the hardest time at the moment. Not only have sales collapsed. This month it also emerged that the group has withdrawn an investment of 11 billion kroner in Maserati. Read more about it here .
