Google Built-in is the infotainment system in many new cars. Now a number of restrictions are being lifted so that more apps are automatically allowed.
Several car brands already have cars running around with Google's built-in software. And now they're getting more functional.
Google Built-in, as the system is called, removes a number of restrictions that have until now kept several apps out of reach of drivers.
The system is based on Google's own Android, which is the name of the operating system used in everything from the tech giant's own phones to Samsung, Motorola, Sony, Xiaomi and many other brands.
Until now, Google has kept a close eye on what is actually allowed in cars. However, things like navigation and YouTube have gotten through.
But now, many more apps from Google's own Play Store will be opened up, the company says in a press release .
More apps are automatically allowed by Google
Specifically, Android apps that meet a number of requirements will automatically be available in cars with Google built into the infotainment system.
It starts with around 70 apps, which will initially be available to Volvo and Polestar owners, while Rivian owners will soon also benefit from the additional options.
Among the 70 apps that are now being opened up are a number of games – including Angry Birds. Of course, not all of these programs can be used by the driver when the car first hits the road.
According to the American tech giant, there are currently over 200 million cars on the road with Android Auto. As well as over 40 new car models being born with the built-in system.
On the other hand, not all car brands are equally enthusiastic about either Android Auto or Apple's counterpart CarPlay.
General Motors will not allow the programs at all. And Mercedes will not allow any of the two operating systems to take up all the space on the screens in the brand's cars.
