Nissan GT-R ends production after 18 years

The Nissan GT-R has never officially been on sale in Denmark. But after 18 years, the order books are also permanently closed in Japan.

The Nissan GT-R is one of the oldest cars you can technically buy from the factory today. It's been 18 years in the making. But now the order books are also closed in Japan. This means the car can no longer be ordered from the factory anywhere in the world.

The brand itself writes this on its website .

Production for the North American market stopped in October last year, while Nissan kept the order books open at home in Japan.

– The Nissan GT-R has received orders from many customers, and now the influx of orders is being closed in relation to the amount of cars that are already planned, says a loosely translated message from the Japanese.

It is unclear how many GT-R models, and thus hand-built 3.8-liter V6 engines, Nissan already has in its 'customer bank'. Or even when the last car will roll out of the factory.

Nissan would like to continue for another 17 years

But it's certain that the last customers have signed up for a car. However, the Japanese are sad that GT-R production is ending.

Already last year, the brand made it clear that it would have liked to keep the assembly line, which is partly run by hand, alive for many more years. However, that is not possible. Read more about it here .

The GT-R model disappeared from the brand's European model range in the summer of 2021. At that time, new noise requirements were blamed. Later, the car also disappeared in Australia because it could not meet stricter crash test requirements.

When the R35 GT-R first appeared in late 2007, it had 480 horsepower from a 3.8-liter V6 engine with twin turbos. Over the years, the horsepower numbers grew.

Today, the top model, nicknamed the Nismo Track Edition, has 600 horsepower. However, there are 50 cars called the GT-R50 with a whopping 720 horsepower from the same engine.

The car was, as the name suggests, built to celebrate Nissan's performance division Nismo's 50th anniversary in 2020.

If Nissan, which is currently facing serious financial problems, survives as a brand, there is much to suggest that the GT-R model's successor will be an electric car.

Recently, however, Nissan announced that it will close half of its factory in Sunderland, England, in order to save money. This is where the Qashqai model is built for the European market, among other things.

In addition, 9,000 employees worldwide are to be laid off . But that may not be enough. After failed negotiations with Honda, Nissan management made it clear that they could run out of money within a year.
