Crash in Denmark – Tesla's sales more than halved

Tesla's sales in Denmark are plummeting. In February, the American brand fell by more than fifty percent. In Norway and Sweden, the decline continues.

Tesla is declining significantly in Denmark. Sales figures for February show that the number of newly registered Tesla models of 509 cars is a 58 percent drop compared to the same month in 2024.

However, the trend of declining Tesla sales is not an isolated Danish phenomenon. It is also declining in other Scandinavian countries.

In Sweden, sales of Tesla cars have fallen by 42 percent, while the decline in Norway is 48 percent.

The falling sales figures do not reflect a general decline in car sales. On the contrary, figures from the industry show a stable or slightly increasing trend.

One possible explanation for the decline in Tesla sales is pure politics. At least that's what Ilyas Dogru, chief consultant and consumer economist at FDM, believes.

The decline may be politically motivated

He believes that several Danes express a desire to buy an electric car, but that it must not or should not be a Tesla.

– Many people start by saying: 'I want to buy an electric car, but I don't want it to be a Tesla.'

"Political consumers have always been there, but it's more pronounced with Tesla right now," he says in a comment to Reuters .

The reason for the political opposition to Tesla must be found, among other things, in Elon Musk's public support for Donald Trump and the Tesla director's repeated attempts to interfere in European politics.

Something else that could affect sales is consumer expectations for and about a new version of the Tesla Model Y.

Consumers may hold off on their purchase in anticipation of the new model. Or that the current model will drop in price. The FDM consultant does not deny this.

Some even speculate that Tesla may be finished. According to Berlingske, Tesla will never return to the top of the Danish sales charts.

However, it is too early to draw conclusions. Tesla sales may pick up with the launch of the new Model Y, which the brand begins delivering this month.

In France, the American brand is also declining. In contrast, a brand like Toyota, which refuses to believe that electric cars make up more than 30 percent of the market, is making significant progress. Read more about it here .
