The Danish Motor Agency loses – this is how license plates can now be placed

The Danish Motor Vehicle Authority has so far cracked down on motorcyclists whose license plates were not aligned with the rear wheel. But that is a lie, says the National Tax Court.

The Danish Motor Vehicle Authority has suffered another defeat. This time to the motorcycle enthusiasts, who are now allowed to place the number plate on their motorcycles more freely.

This is stated by the Danish Motor Agency in a press release .

Until the defeat in the National Tax Court, the Danish Motor Vehicle Authority had held that a license plate on a motorcycle was only legally mounted if it was flush with the outer edge of the motorcycle's rear wheel.

If a motorcyclist wanted to place the license plate differently, they would have to apply for a dispensation. But the Danish Motor Authority is now going to crack down on that practice.

The National Tax Court has concluded that mounting on the side of the motorcycle is just as valid as mounting flush with the rear wheel. No exemption should be sought for this.

These license plates can now avoid booths

The authorities in Denmark must therefore accept that a license plate is correctly mounted if it otherwise meets the requirements for visibility, the agency writes.

As it stands today, the police can issue a fine of 1,000 kroner if a license plate is not correctly mounted.

But with the decision, motorcyclists are allowed to mount the license plate with a bracket that extends from and is 'attached to' the wheel axle.

Specifically, the authorities now believe that motorcycle license plates can be placed according to a number of conditions. In particular, 'conditions number 4 and 5' give a good idea of the new rules.

Condition 4: The license plate must never be more than 1.5 meters from the roadway.

Condition 5: – it is divided into several points.

The license plate must be visible throughout the area within the following four planes:

  • The horizontal plane through the bottom edge of the license plate.
  • The two vertical planes through the side edges of the license plate, forming an angle of 30° outwards
  • The plane through the upper edge of the license plate that forms an angle of 15° upwards with the horizontal plane
