20-year-old loophole made illegal Tesla legal

Some men have managed to convince the authorities that the Tesla Cybertruck is a good idea. All because of a 20-year-old loophole in the law.

The Tesla Cybertruck, the controversial electric car, is not type approved in Europe. Yet it is rolling on Norwegian roads. How is that possible? The answer is a loophole.

A loophole in the law makes it possible to import used cars from other markets. This means that the Tesla Cybertruck, which is approved in the US, could also become legal in Norway.

The Tesla Cybertruck has attracted attention with its futuristic design and controversial safety aspects.

The angular construction and the lack of collision zones have raised concerns about pedestrian safety.

Nevertheless, it has managed to get it on Norwegian roads. Several copies of the Tesla Cybertruck can already be found in Norway.

This is despite the fact that the car is not type approved, neither in Norway nor in Europe as a whole. This is primarily due to the special design and concerns about the safety of vulnerable road users.

Nevertheless, there are Tesla Cybertrucks for sale in Norway. They are approved and ready for Norwegian roads.

The importer has collaborated with the Danish Public Roads Administration and Drammen Traffic Station. It is not stated exactly how the approval was obtained.

But it turns out that the importer has taken advantage of a "loophole" in the law. This makes it possible to import used cars that are approved in other markets.

"The Tesla Cybertruck is approved according to Section 5-3 of the Norwegian Motor Vehicle Regulations," says Arne Amdahl Bakkevig from the Norwegian Road Administration.

– It states that a car that has been registered for at least six months before being imported into Norway can be approved based on its compliance with American or Canadian regulations."

Norwegian Machinery confirms this to Norwegian TV2 .

The import rule under which the Tesla is approved has existed for over 20 years.

According to Amdahl Bakkevig, it is no different for the Tesla Cybertruck than other American used cars that are not available as new in Norway.

According to the website, registration documentation must be provided. It must also be documented that the car meets either American or Canadian safety requirements.
