These desired license plates were rejected by the Danish Motor Agency in 2024

The so-called "desired" number plates are expensive in Denmark. But that doesn't give you the right to any text. This is shown by a document review that Boosted has obtained from the Danish Motor Vehicle Authority.

Here in Denmark, request number plates were introduced following the Swedish model in 1992. But not all drivers get their wishes fulfilled. Some number plates are rejected.

This is shown by a document access that Boosted has received from the Danish Motor Authority.

Recently, the Swedish authorities released the list of rejected license plates. And here, a hopeful motorist had applied for the right to the license plate MAFF1A.

But that kind of thing doesn't work. Not even in Denmark.

Here, it is the Danish Motor Vehicle Authority that is responsible for processing and approving or rejecting the requests that drivers may have for the personalized pieces of metal.

Ever since the introduction of custom license plates in Denmark, some Danes have been thinking a little too creatively. For example, there were five rejections between 2013 and 2016. The license plate 'SUTMAI', for example, was not accepted.

Here are the rules

But what exactly is an approved custom license plate in Denmark? There are very specific rules for that.

Firstly, the number plate must always consist of between two and seven characters. These can be numbers or letters as long as they are in the Danish alphabet. And of course, the number plate must not already be in use.

Apart from the purely formal requirements for the design of the number plate, the number plate must not be perceived as offensive. It is solely the responsibility of the Danish Motor Vehicle Authority to decide whether a number plate can offend someone or not.

The price for a custom license plate is 9,180 kroner. Of this, 8,000 kroner covers the right to the license plate for a period of 8 years. The rest is purely a fee for having the license plate issued.

The Danish Motor Vehicle Authority informs Boosted that the authority has processed 346 cases regarding optional license plates during 2024. Of these, the vast majority were approved.

In fact, only two of the 346 applications were rejected. One wanted to write BFFB, while another driver, similar to the Swedish rejection, wanted to drive around with the license plate MAFIA.

The Swedes, on the other hand, have made ample use of 'censorship'. In addition to the allusion to the criminal gangs, license plates such as: Police, Dyret, FAKU, Psyko, Pisk and Fucking were rejected.

So did the license plates: Camel, Illegal, 2Fast4U, HotASS, B4NDIT, Dod, Svensk and VR3DE.

Here in Denmark, it actually happens that license plates slip through censorship and are later declared illegal.

This happened to a driver from Mors, for example. But the police only intervened in the case when the driver had been given 30 parking spaces. Read more about it here .
