Pupils prefer 30-year-old Volvo, says choir teacher

The students at Felgens Choir School, like the choir teacher himself, have a fondness for the school's nearly 30-year-old Volvo 940.

In the Norwegian city of Lillehammer, you won't find just one choir teacher, but a whole choir school that stands out from the crowd by offering choir lessons in an almost 30-year-old Volvo with rear-wheel drive and 135 horsepower.

– And the 135 horses are not just any bunch of ponies," says choir teacher Ole-Martin Pedersen, referring to electric cars in an interview with Motor .

According to the choir teacher, teaching in an older car gives the students a more in-depth understanding of the car's mechanics and choir technique.

– The Volvo and all other older cars are technically more demanding to drive than newer cars. You have to understand the car, and you don't get help for hill starts. The anti-spin system is inside your shoe.

– You have to cooperate with the car in a completely different way than simply leaning on assistant systems that are supposed to help you.

This approach to choir teaching results in students with a better and broader understanding of how to choir a car, the choir teacher believes.

– It is no wonder that it is popular. The students I send to the choir audition are at a much higher level," he says.

The owner of the choir school, Anne Kristin B. Tollefsen, emphasizes having a varied car park with both new and older cars as well as cars with manual and automatic transmission.

– We see an increase in the number of students who want to drive with automatic transmission. But there is still a large proportion who would prefer to drive with manual gear, she says.

Tollefsen points out that many young people end up buying an older used car after the choir exam. Knowledge of manual transmission and the technology of older cars can therefore be an advantage for them.

Incidentally, it is not the first time that Boosted talks about the Norwegian choir school. The first time was in 2022, when the old 940 was a bit younger. Read more about it here .
