30,000 jobs at risk – Volkswagen gets unexpected help

30,000 jobs in Germany alone could be at risk if Volkswagen implements an austerity plan. Now the country's government promises to help. But not with everything.

The Volkswagen Group is in the middle of a difficult period, where the future of the car brand depends on the decisions of the management.

Although the German government is willing to provide help, there are limits to what it can do, stated German Economy Minister Robert Habeck during a factory visit at Volkswagen in Emden.

In the course of his visit, Habeck made it clear that it is primarily up to Volkswagen itself to ensure the survival of the brand in the long term.

Reuters writes that.

The minister emphasized that although political support can contribute to improving the framework, it is the company's management that must make the necessary decisions.

– Much of this work must be handled by Volkswagen's management themselves. That's their job, Habeck said.

The Minister of Economy also noted that the government can help create better conditions for the car manufacturer. This can be done, for example, by sending clear signals to the market and by promoting the switch to electric cars through various economic incentives.

He emphasized, however, that there are limits to how much the state will interfere in the operation of a private company. It is therefore only certain conditions that the German government will help with.

According to Habeck, a significant part of the government's support is aimed at ensuring that the applicable rules and agreements between employers and employees are observed.

During the visit to Emden, the minister emphasized the importance of enforcing a fair personnel policy, which is determined by agreements between the social partners.

The government wishes, says the minister, to give the car industry the best possible framework. But Habeck noted that it is crucial that Volkswagen's management takes responsibility themselves.
