90 percent of all electric car owners are sloppy here

In a new survey by YouGov, 90 percent of electric car owners say that they never check the car's technical condition.

90 percent of electric car owners do not carry out regular self-checks of their car's technical condition. This appears from a survey by YouGov for the Association of Automotive Suppliers (ABL). The survey generally shows that only a few car owners are in the habit of checking the vehicle themselves.

According to the survey, only 20 percent of the motorists surveyed say that they regularly check the condition of the car.

For electric car owners, the figure is even lower; just 10 percent state that they check their cars routinely.

Conversely, 27 percent respond that they never do this sort of thing, while eight percent are unsure whether they do it. This means that more than one in three probably never check the car before use.

ABL's daily manager, Arild Hansen, believes that the development causes concern.

– Modern technology and information systems make car maintenance easier, but can never completely replace the owner's self-check that everything is in order with the car, Hansen said in connection with the investigation.

The survey also reveals variations in habits depending on wife, age and place of residence. Women check the car less often than men.

While older car owners are more diligent about self-checking compared to younger ones. In addition, regular checks of the car are more common among car owners in the countryside and in cities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants.

Borre Skiaker, secretary general of the Royal Norwegian Automobile Club (KNA), however, thinks that the survey gives a completely natural picture of motorists.

– It can appear as if motorists' general knowledge of mechanics is lacking, and that many have little interest in the everyday car. It is probably primarily enthusiasts who are just as concerned with cars and maintenance as before.

What should you check?

To avoid problems, it is recommended that car owners go through the following themselves:

  • Carbon liquid level
  • Window cleaner and washer fluid
  • Light
  • Tires and wheels (incl. monster and air pressure)
  • Battery voltage
  • Sounds under the chorus
