7 out of 10 drivers don't mind electric cars, says Toyota

Toyota's former director and current chairman of the board, Aiko Toyoda, does not give much for the electric car. 7 out of 10 will choose something else, he says.

Electric cars will never be the success they are advertised to be.

At least not if you ask Toyota's former director and current board chairman, Aiko Toyoda.

The Toyota executive believes that, globally, electric cars will never account for more than 30 percent of sales. Aiko Toyoda says so in a statement published on Toyota's own media platform .

The rest, Toyoda believes, will now and in the future either choose the petrol and diesel car, a car that runs on hydrogen or an internal combustion engine that burns hydrogen.

– One billion people worldwide live in areas without electricity. Battery cars cannot provide everyone with transport, says the chairman of the board.

In the same statement, Toyoda criticizes the media, which he believes only talks down the brand for being behind in the development of electric cars.

– The important thing is not to switch to an electric car or a fuel cell car. CO2 is the enemy. So let's all think about how we can reduce CO2 emissions right away, it says.

Toyoda also believes that the Japanese have their own way of tackling the automotive industry's challenges. In any case, he is not sure that it is best to imitate everything the West does.

Conversely, there are others who are far more optimistic about the electric car when it comes to market shares. For example, the International Energy Council expects that the electric car will already occupy 67 percent of the market in 2030.

It has happened, however, that several car brands are now completely dropping their targets for electric cars. Most recently, Mercedes' director reportedly dropped the development of a completely new platform for electric cars. Read more about it here .
